Pull Up
A major gripe my wife has had since following me to the “dark side” and becoming a Tesla owner, is the lack of Sirius XM in her Model Y. No question her favorite feature in her previous car was full Sirius XM support. She’s been a fan since around 2002 when her older brother introduced us to it. It’s a great way to find new artists, new genres, and especially new music. We live in a streaming world, yes, but we keep coming back to internet radio. So, imagine her joy at it being announced today!
Clearly, she’s excited at the 2024 Tesla Holiday Update Announcement, and if you love Sirius XM you will be as well.
Top Story: At Long Last Sirius XM for the Model 3/Y
If you’ve scoured any Tesla owner forums since about 2018 you will see a few common requests - support for Apple CarPlay, support for Android Auto, and Sirius XM. For us early Model 3 adopters, it was made worse by the fact that the Model S had at the time and continues to have full on support for XM radio. The amount of reading I’ve done on work arounds, self-installations, and setups with or without the infamous “shark fin”. Someone recently even discovered that with a few hacks you can even get the Model S app to show in the Model 3/Y. Still, with other internet audio apps on board it seemed to be a no-brainer. But, year after year, it was … nothing.
We found a work around. By logging into the web based version of Sirius XM through the Tesla browser you can use it in the vehicle. No hardware required. it makes perfect sense, since the Tesla browser is surprisingly well-featured. Wonderful! Except it truly is a work around, so there are a myriad of limitations. Whenever you close the browser the music stops. Put the car in reverse the music stops. Use the navigation search and the music stops. So on and so on.
Elon, all we need is a working app. So simple.

And there it is in the announcement that the 2024 Tesla Holiday update will have Sirius XM support for Model 3/Y (and Cybertruck) and it will start rolling out next week!
Other Cool Stuff in the Full Announcement
This year as in the past is chock-full of new goodies in the newly announced 2024 Holiday Update. See the announcement for all the features, but here are a couple more I thought were useful for me:
Tesla App on Apple Watch
Utilize your Apple Watch as your phone key, to view your battery’s remaining charge, to open the frunk, and turn on climate control. I’ve used 3rd party apps for this in the past, but something about official Apple Watch support makes it all the better.

Set Arrival Energy at Destination
In the past, the Model 3 would have you arriving at a destination with approximately 20% battery left. Then one day that ‘feature’ just seemed to disappear. Honestly, I never confirmed if it was an official feature, but it was handy and consistent on my car. So, this adjustment will come in clutch for those trips out of town.

This is huge for me. We take our Teslas on trips often, no more mental math on charging stops. Image: Tesla

Speaking of Sirius XM - Did You Know About this Sonos Tip?
There’s a hidden benefit of using Sirius XM with Sonos that I NEVER see folks talking about. Maybe it’s out there, but either way I’m going to share a secret with you now. I don’t have a Sirius XM account. I probably never will buy one. It’s my wife’s thing. Do I use it all the time? Yes, here’s how:
Once you integrate Sirius XM into your Sonos account, everyone with access to that Sonos account can use it. Simple. Magical.
Similar to how I can see my wife’s playlists in my Sonos login I can see her Sirius XM account and I get the full breadth of all Sonos features with it. It’s right there in the ‘Your Services’ list. A service I don’t personally pay for, but get to use anytime I’m in the comfort of my home, via Sonos. Simple. Magical This is simply one of the unspoken benefits of using Sonos. It’s a neat trick you can do with sharing accounts through the Sonos system. (btw, I have no doubt it works with other apps besides Sirius XM) Sonos had a rough year, but if you know the tricks, the system is unmatched. And this is why I consistently recommend it to people. |

What Else I’m Reading Today
