Welcome Wagon
Whether you work from home or have a daily commute if you have a garage then you know one constant is pressing the garage door opener. Talk about pushing buttons, because yes it presses mine.
Did you remember to close the garage before you left the house? Did your kids remember to close it after they came home from school? Well, MyQ for Garage solves all of those worries. It's an app that allows you to control your garage door from anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection. You can open or close your garage door, and even get alerts if your door is left open for too long.
Let’s talk about Control
Having full control of your garage from an app is a plus. Having full control of your garage from your car is the best. We can certainly be inundated with apps on apps, but this one is a definite positive.
Supported on both Android and iOS my Q gives you secure and smart access to your garage controls. When I had my garage door and track updated, the option of having myQ control was explained to me and I immediately opted for not only myQ for app control, but also the 360 camera.
If you’re like me and order EVERYTHING from Amazon like this that means you have packages coming at all times during the week. Often times when I’m traveling or away from home, I’ll have a package delivered. Thankfully, I have trustworthy neighbors. So, I can (and have) ask my neighbor to grab the package, open the door remotely for him to place it in my garage. Then, I can pull up the live stream to see when I need to close it back.
Another great feature is the up front notification on the status of whether the garage is open or closed as well as the time it has been closed. This is a ‘peace of mind’ feature that has eased my anxiety many, many times.

My Garage has been Closed for 22 minutes

Tesla Integration
Now if you happen to drive a Tesla, you have the capability to add a MyQ enabled Garage door opener account to your Tesla and open or close the garage door directly from your car.
This feature is called myQ Connected Garage for Tesla. It will allow you to check the status of your Garage directly from the touch panel. You can open and close the garage with the press of one button on your Tesla touch panel. | ![]() |
But the integration goes even further than that. MyQ for Garage can also automatically open your garage door when you arrive home in your Tesla. This feature, similar to "Tesla HomeLink", uses the GPS location of your car to trigger the garage door to auto open.
There are a few simple options for setup
on-approach - distance away from home before the garage opens (I use 20ft)
on-leave distance away from home before the garage auto-closes when you leave
auto-fold mirrors
auto-chime on open/close
Once setup it works as intended.
Here’s a downside I have come across with the auto-open. I live on a cul-de-sac, so whenever I drive past my house to park on the road, it still opens the garage door. And there is no ‘easy’ way to stop the process once it kicks off. You hear the audible ‘ding’ and it starts the process. You CAN’T override it from the screen, but you CAN always use the actual garage door opener to override it, if needed.
The app also advertises that you can use one account on multiple Tesla’s, however while that works, I have noticed that on one Tesla the auto-close isn’t as seamless if the other Tesla is still parked within the garage. I’m sure that can be rectified with an update, or configuration setting.
Note: This has been fixed with an update
Amazon Key
![]() | Earlier I disclosed my affinity for ordering from Amazon. |
From a convenience perspective, this is a great feature, however, Amazon recently updated the Amazon key to charge a small fee for use, unless you use Key in conjunction with an Amazon Day delivery, which means you may have to select a longer delivery cycle. For those of us who like our packages now, well we may need to excercise a bit of patience for the extra convenience.

A cautious perspective courtesy of my wife.
She doesn’t like the Amazon Key AT ALL. Hearing the garage door open unannounced is frightening. Having strangers observe the cars we drive and other odds and ends in our garage is unsettling. In other words, cancel the service. I
Here’s a downside to the deliveries. I have noticed that different drivers will deliver the packages to different places within the garage, some at the very front, others will walk the package all the way to your Garage entry door. Not only does it make it hard to find the package at times. (Perhaps I just need to clean my garage) But, if you are concerned about privacy in your garage, definitely something to consider. Some drivers will walk between your cars all the way to the entry door of your home.
I have read that many others have been wary of it as well, especially the in-home service, which I have not used. Definitely be mindful of the type of access required when using this service.
Wrap Up and Final Thoughts
In conclusion, MyQ for Garage is an incredibly useful app that solves the age-old problem of worrying about your garage door. And with its integration with Tesla and Amazon Key, it becomes even more convenient and useful. So if you're a tech enthusiast like me, be sure to check out MyQ for Garage and take control of your garage door today!
